Thoughts on last night's exhibition game

We got our first glimpse of the 2011-2012 Patriots in action last night in a 90-62 win over Lycoming College.  I won't read too much into this dress rehearsal but there were a few things that we can take from the game last night.  Overall the Patriots shot well from the field but not from the three-point line, they dominated the glass which was expected considered the huge size advantage, and forced a number of turnovers.  It was not encouraging however how they turnovered the ball over 11 times themselves and that the Lycoming zone defense gave them a bit of trouble. A pleasant surprise was the play of Paris Bennett, who showed glimpses of being a "glue-guy" finishing with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

-Erik Copes was as good as advertised and showed a much better scoring touch than I'd thought we'd see. He'll have a much more difficult time trying to get those jump hook shots off when they play DI teams obviously, but he looked a lot less raw than I thought he was. He's gritty, tough, inside player that will complement Morrison and Pearson inside nicely this season.

-Mike Morrison shot 5-6 from the free throw line. Please tell me he's improved from there.

-Paris Bennett looked a lot more comfortable playing at the 3 spot instead of subbing in at power forward like he did last season.  He won't score 10 points a night but he will grab a rebound, dish out an assist, and collect a steal whenever he's in the game. The Patriots will need a guy like this to help fill the void left by Luke Hancock.

-Bryon Allen and Corey Edwards looked comfortable running the point however their roles could change once Vertrail Vaughns is back on the court. Allen looked confident and will most likely see a lot of time running the point this season.  Edwards did not look like a freshman and helped the offense run smoothly, especially in the second half. He will definitely push for minutes in the back court this season.

-Sherrod Wright looked a bit rusty, which was expected.  I was surprised he didn't attempt any shots from behind the arch but he did finish 5-for-7 from the field.  He showed his ability to get to the rim, which is something fans should get used to seeing this season from Wright. Hopefully he dusts off the rust sooner rather than later.

MikeMO!!!!  Way to go on the free throws!  Maybe you take the rest of the game with a grain of salt, but from behind the charity stripe it's just you and the hoop.  'Cept maybe it's not exactly a pressure shot in a game like this, but with MO wouldn't every ft attempt have some pressure to it?
On the subject of free throws, that would be the other thing to possibly take from the game, that we shot a LOT of them.  Are we gonna be a team that charges the rim and gets to the foul line a lot?

Copes looked very good, ready to contribute right away.  I think that jump hook will serve him well even against better opponents.  He gets his shot off quickly and the hook is tough to defend, unless double-teamed.

I do think we will see this team attack the rim more this season. Allen, Edwards, and Wright should get to the foul line a lot this year.

Come talk to me when he starts a game that means something and other players aren't missing.

Well until/if Cornelius comes back, he may be the best option unless you see Vertrial starting, which I wouldn't be opposed too, if just feel that he is better served as a scoring option off the bench.

Nice exhibition win for Hewitt, even if its not a d1 opponent. Thanks for the vid, couldn't make it last night.

& props to Mike Mo for putting in some work at the stripe, looks like I'll be able to have my head in my hands a lot less often when he's taking his charity flips this year.

Heard that, why this wasn't implemented years before is beyond me. Free throw shooting has been a weakness since 2001.

Very well said. I really liked the fact they were double teamed. That gives the team a good practice point. Sure it will take some time to blend and for everyone to understand their roles but playing for minutes will help that. Really did like the guard play. No doubt we will put up points with a quicker tempo but in the end just like football,it will be defense and turnovers that will decide the games that count.

Any insight on Vaughn's ankle injury?  All I keep hearing is that it prevented him from starting, but is it serious enough to keep him from playing in the home opener?  I think he should be a starter because he is able to stretch the defense with his 3pt shooting capability.  Think in the exhibition the other point guards were hesitant to take the 3...I don't know if it's nerves or if Paul Hewitt does not have the same "green light" philosophy that Larranaga had because it seems Hewitt is much more focused on getting to the rim.  Thoughts??

It's minor, he was just kept out as a precaution.  Hewitt said in the post game interview he would have started.

niiice, Mo can cause a lot of frustration in the paint, if he starts turning all those hacks into points that'd be a huge plus
